Stumbling through the great outdoors

Storming the Castle

Cool title eh?

So we took a camping trip that could have been a beach trip, man was it hot. I associate camping and mountains with cool air and fires, not 100+ degrees! Luckily we survived and I learned a lot more about what my body will put up with and how I need to adapt next time.

A few hours drive and we were in the Shasta National forest at Sims Flat Campground, pretty much right off the freeway but hidden away to where it was very private and no road noise…never-mind the train noise you get used to it! Our spot was right next to a hidden creek about 20 feet down a path, the river was on the other side of the road easily within walking distance.

PROTIP:

Put your camping chair IN the creek to enjoy a much cooler experience.

My girlfriend

It was hard to sleep that first night we only had one little fan in the tent, so next time more airflow will be key to have on backup. The second day we drove about 10 minutes to Castle Crags State Park where Subie the Subaru provided a wonderful air-conditioned respite.

We were planning on just driving through the park and seeing what we could, however we came across a trail that even I could do! It was about 102 degrees but I managed the half mile hike to the vista where we could see BOTH Castle Crags as well as Mt. Shasta, with beautiful snow atop.

So this was a super fun trip and learning experience on how I need to adapt for camping and what to have on hand to handle unexpected conditions. I now get the fun of organizing our camping gear for the next adventure. I love that part!

Signing off from Castle Crags!
